Softball Ends Regular Season with Split at Clarke; Begins Postseason Play Thursday
The Culver-Stockton softball team concluded the regular season by splitting a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, Saturday afternoon.
A five-run fifth inning in the opening game was the difference as the Wildcats posted a 7-5 victory. In the nightcap, the Pride plated 10 runs over the first three innings and then held off a late rally by C-SC to gain the split with an 11-7 victory.
The first game was tied 2-2 after four innings when the Wildcats exploded for five runs after two were out in the fifth inning.
Alle Thompson started the uprising with a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Baylee Schneider.
Brylee Throgmorton then reached on an error to place runners at first and second. Kataleena Hunt followed with another RBI single to score pinch runner Taylor Worthey for a 4-2 lead.
Myah Briese then walked to load the bases before Selina Guzman ripped a two-run single to right to score Throgmorton and Hunt. Briese was also able to score when the right fielder bobbled the ball for an error.
Guzman finished the day with three hits in four at-bats and had two runs batted in. Schneider also had a multiple hit game with two hits.
Emma Roseberry pitched a complete-game, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. She walked four and struck out seven to improve to 12-10 on the season.
In game two, Clarke touched C-SC starter Kenzie Guilfoyle for seven runs (5 earned) in the first two innings to take a 7-0 lead.
C-SC battled back to within 7-4 with four runs in the third inning. Katelyn Felt doubled home the first run before Schneider and Haylee McGinty drew bases loaded walks to force in two more runs. The final run was scored with Faith McCosley reached on an error with the bases loaded.
The Pride extended their lead to 10-4 with three more runs in the bottom of the third, and then added a solo run in the fifth to make it an 11-4 lead.
The Wildcats continued to battle, plating three runs in the sixth inning. Kamryn Biggs delivered a RBI single, Samantha Robles drove in a run with a groundout, and Hunter Huddle single in the third run.
The Wildcats finish the regular season with a 20-30 overall record and a 12-14 mark in the Heart. C-SC has qualified for the postseason tournament and will play top-seeded Central Methodist at noon on Thursday, May 4, at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.
