Softball Goes 1-1 on Final Day at St. Ambrose Classic
The Culver-Stockton softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Saint Ambrose Classic at the Ambrose Dome in Davenport, Iowa, Sunday.
The Wildcats got a complete game from Aspen Harrison in claiming a 3-1 victory over Cornerstone (Mich.) in the first game Sunday morning. In the nightcap against the host school, Saint Ambrose plated three unearned runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Wildcats 3-2.
In the opener, Harris was magnificent in the circle, allowing six hits and one run while striking out eight and walking four.
Offensively, C-SC managed just three hits in the game but they all came in the third inning when the Wildcats scored all their runs.
Faith McCoskey and Brylee Throgmorton opened the inning with singles. After Sophia Ashby flew out for the first out, Harrison reached on an error allowing McCoskey to score the games first run.
After a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third, Selina Guzman grounded out to drive in Throgmorton with the second run. Kataleena Hunt then singled home Harrison with the Wildcats' third run.
In the nightcap, C-SC jumped out to a 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Rosa Anquiano began the frame with a walk. Pinch runner Shelby Daniels moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout by Cierra Bush.
Throgmorton followed with a single to score Daniels with the first run. Throgmorton then stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Myah Briese reached on an error.
In the bottom of the inning, C-SC hurler Lauren Sinks struck out the first two batters of the inning before allowing a double with two out. A single followed to put runners at the corners before an error by the Wildcats allowed one run to score. Another single followed to score both runs and the Bees led 3-2.
The Wildcats (3-7) are scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 27, against Hannibal-LaGrange University at Himsl Field. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
