Hunt, Throgmorton Power Wildcats to Sweep over Peru State

Kataleena Hunt and Brylee Throgmorton each drove in five runs as the Culver-Stockton College softball team swept a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader from Peru State (Neb.) Monday afternoon at Himsl Field.

Hunt went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and five runs batted in as the Wildcats claimed the opener 9-1 in five innings. In the nightcap, Throgmorton hit a three-run homer and added an RBI double and game-ending single to finish the second game perfect in three at-bats and five RBI.

C-SC jumped on the Bobcats early in game one. After Aspyn Harrison popped out to start the bottom of the first, Lacey Stamper walked, and Ryley Pecina ripped a single setting the stage for Hunt's three-run homer to right field.

The Wildcats added four more runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Harrison singled, stole second and scored on a double by Stamper.

Stamper advanced to third on a wild pitch and Pecina walked and stole second to put runners at second and third for Hunt, who drilled a single to right to score Stamper with her fourth RBI of the game.

In the fourth inning, Harrison doubled for her second hit of the game and Stamper walked before Pecina hit into a fielder's choice erasing Stamper at second base. Hunt followed with her third hit to right to plate Harris with her fifth RBI.

Penny Ruiz made the lead stand as she scattered five hits over five innings, allowing one run. She struck out five and did not walk a batter for her fourth victory in 10 decisions this season.

In the second game, Lauren Sinks started for the Wildcats and allowed two hits which led to two unearned runs in the top of the first inning.

However, the Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two Bobcat miscues to score two unearned runs of their own.

C-SC, which scored in every inning of game two, added three runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Throgmorton, who them scored on a throwing error after a Harrison single. Pecina added a run-scoring double to score Harrison for a 5-2 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Haley Gedros started the frame with a double and Sophia Ashby singled before Throgmorton drilled her three-run homer to centerfield to give the Wildcats a commanding 8-2 lead.

Hunt added a solo home run, her second of the day, in the fourth inning, and then Throgmorton drove home Ashby, who had walked and stole second, with an RBI single to end the game due to the run rule.

Sinks picked up her first victory since March 2 to improve to 2-6 on the season. Sinks allowed just two more hits after the first inning, walking two and striking out five.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play another conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 9, at William Penn University in a makeup from last week. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
