Wildcats Register 19 hits in Doubleheader Split at William Penn

The Culver-Stockton College softball team collected 19 hits but settled for a split of its Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader with William Penn University Tuesday afternoon at Penn Field in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Wildcats recorded 10 hits  but only managed two runs in a 5-2 loss in the opener. In the nightcap, C-SC registered nine hits and took advantage of three Statesmen errors to post an 8-4 victory.

In the victory, the Wildcats scored a run in the second, two more in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. C-SC added another run in the fifth to increase the lead to 7-0 before William Penn plated three runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Wildcats put an insurance run across in the top of the seventh and the Statesmen matched that run but failed to do any more damage as the Wildcats improved to 13-25 overall and 4-10 in the Heart.

Selina Guzman and Brylee Throgmorton each went 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored. Guzman added a run batted in. Aspyn Harrison was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Penny Ruiz picked up the victory in the circle, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs (two earned) in the complete game victory. Ruiz walked two and struck out one.

In the opener, William Penn scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. The hosts added another run in the second inning and one more in the sixth frame.

C-SC plated one run each in t he fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Alexis Davis doubled home  Throgmorton in the fifth, and Haley Gedros had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Harrison collected three hits in four at-bats while Davis, Gedros, and Kataleena Hunt recorded two hits each. 

The Wildcats are scheduled to play four games this Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14 at Himsl Field. C-SC faces Graceland in a doubleheader Saturday before hosting Grand View Sunday. First pitch both days are slated for 1 p.m.
