Anguiano's Slam Helps Wildcats Avoid Sweep

Rosa Anguiano hit a grand slam home run in a five-run third inning to help the Culver-Stockton softball team avoid a second consecutive sweep with an 8-2 victory over Grand View University Sunday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats, who were swept by Graceland Saturday, lost the opening game Sunday 7-3 to the Vikings.

In the victory, the Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the third inning by scoring five times on just two hits. 

Cierra Bush was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third when Sophia Ashby attempted to sacrifice but reached when the throw from the first baseman was wild with Ashby taking second. Aspyn Harrison followed with a RBI single to score Bush and the Wildcats led 1-0.

Lacey Stamper popped out and Ryley Pecina fouled out as appeared the Vikings might escape with just one run being scored. However, Grand View opted to load the bases by giving Kataleena Hunt an unintentional, intentional walk.

Anguiano made the Vikings pay by driving a pitch over the right-center field fence for a gran slam home run and a 5-0 Wildcat lead.

Grand View got back one run in the fourth inning, but the Wildcats quickly added three runs in th e bottom of the inning to put some distance between them and the visitors.

After a leadoff single by Brylee Throgmorton, the Wildcats were again helped by a pair of errors on a sacrifice attempt, putting runners at second and third.

Harrison and Stamper drove in a run each with RBI singles and Pecina followed with a sacrifice fly to finish the Wildcat scoring.

Harrison, who collected two hits in the game, pitched the first five innings to earn the victory. Harrison scattered six hits, allowed two walks, struck out three and hit a batter. Penny Ruiz hurled a scoreless two innings for C-SC, allowing two hits.

In the opener, C-SC fell behind 2-0 by allowing two runs in the first inning; however, scored three times in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

Hunt got the Wildcats on the board with a RBI double and then then two more runs scored on a two-out error on a ball hit by Haley Gedros.

The Vikings regained the lead with a five-run sixth inning, putting together five hits and taking advantage of two Wildcat errors to score four unearned runs.

The Wildcats are slated to play a non-conference doubleheader this Wednesday, April 17, at Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal, Mo. The first game is scheduled to to start at 2 p.m.
