Hunt's Walk Off; Pecina's Slam Highlights Senior Day Sweep over Clarke

The Culver-Stockton softball team celebrated senior day in grand style with a doubleheader sweep over Clarke University at Himsl Field Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats came from behind in the first game to force extra innings before winning 9-6 in on a Kataleena Hunt walk off three-run homer in the eighth. In game two, Ryley Pecina hit a grand slam to propel the Wildcats to an 11-3 run rule victory to end the season.

C-SC used the long ball to grab a 2-0 lead in the opener as Rosa Anguiano and Aspyn Harrison each hit solo home runs in the second inning.

The Pride answered with four runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead.

C-SC closed to within a run at 5-4 with two runs in the fifth inning as Lacey Stamper recorded a sacrifice fly and Haley Gedros delivered a run-scoring to single make it 5-4.

A wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning gave Clarke an insurance run and a two-run lead as the Wildcats came up for their final at-bat.

Gedros opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a fly ball by Hunt. Anguiano then hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-5.

With two out, Pecina doubled to keep the Wildcats alive, and Harrison followed a RBI single to tie the game. Harrison, who moved up to second on a throwing error, was stranded and the game went to extra innings.

Harris, who relieved starter Makayla Slavik in the fourth inning, set the Pride down in order in the top of the eighth, setting the table for the game-winning rally.

Clarke retired the first two C-SC batters before Stemper walked and Gedros singled to put runners at the corners.

Gedros stole second before Hunt drove the next pitch down the right field line and inside the foul pole for the game-winning home run.

Gedros went 4-for-5 with a double and a run batted in, while Harrison finished 3-for-4 and finished a double short of the cycle with a single, triple and home run.

Harrison earned the victory to improve to 4-6 on the season. She hurled the final 4 1/3 innings and allowing four hits and two runs. She walked one and struck out two.

In game two, Clarke jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Wildcats answered with two runs of their own in the bottom the inning and two more in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Hunt hit a sacrifice fly and Pecina registered a run-scoring single in the first inning, while Sophia Ashby tripled home Grace Utz and Myah Briese hit a sacrifice fly to score Ashby in the second inning.

In the third inning, Pecina singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Utz drove her home with a single to make it a three-run lead at 5-2.

C-SC then exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to put the game in mercy rule territory as Briese reached on an error, Stamper walked and Gedros singled to load the bases. 

After a pitching change and a pop out by Hunt, Pecina ran the count to 3-0 before getting the green light and cleared the bases with her first career home run.

Brylee Throgmorton continued the rally with a single, Cierra Bush walked and Utz registered her third straight single to load the bases again.

Ashby then walked to force in the fifth run of the inning before Briese hit another sacrifice fly to end the Wildcat scoring at six in the frame and 11 for the game.

Pecina finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI while Gedros was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Utz also went 3-for-3 and Ashby and Briese finished with two RBI's each.

Penny Ruiz was the beneficiary as she earned the victory in the circle to even her record at 7-7 on the year. Ruiz allowed six hits and three runs while striking out three.

C-SC finishes the season with a 18-32 overall record and concludes the conference season with a 7-17 make inside the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
