Wildcats Fall Twice to Central Methodist Despite Strong Effort

A strong effort by the Culver-Stockton softball team came up short in both ends of a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader with ninth-ranked Central Methodist University Monday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats collected nine hits in a 4-2 loss in the first game and recorded eight more hits in a 6-4 loss in the nightcap.

In the opener, C-SC found itself trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning when the hosts started a rally. Tiffany Lepic opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a ground out by Ryley Pecina. Kataleena Hunt followed with a single to score Lepic, moving up to second on the throw.

Lacey Stamper, facing a new pitcher, flew out for the second out but Payton Todd came through with a two-out RBI with a single to score Hunt and cut the lead in half. The inning ended with a ground out back to the circle by Carli Scifres.

In the seventh, the Wildcats brought the tying run to the plate when Cierra Bush singled with one out. However, Lepic, who already had three hits in the game, lined out to short to end the game.

Lepic finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Hunt was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Gabriella Bryan, making her first varsity start, went the distance, allowing nine hits and four runs (two earned). She struck out two and walked two.

In the nightcap, C-SC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to score Lepic after Pecina had doubled Lepic to third.

The Eagles plated four runs in the third inning to take a three run lead but the Wildcats quickly answered with a two-run third inning to pull within 4-3.

Lepic and Pecina each singled with one out and Hunt delivered a big two out, two-run double to score both runners.

CMU added an insurance run in the fourth inning, but again the Wildcats responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Todd was hit by a pitch to start the uprising, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Huddle and moved to third on a single by Lauren Ferguson. Todd scored when Scifres grounded out to short.

Pecina was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored while Ferguson added two hits in three at-bats. Hunt recorded three runs batted in.

The Wildcats are slated to host MidAmerica Nazarene University this Friday, April 11, in a Heart doubleheader at Himsl Field. The first game is set to start at 2 p.m.
