Six-Run Sixth Inning in Game Two Helps Softball Split with MVC

A six-run fifth inning was all the scoring the Culver-Stockton softball team needed to post a 6-1 victory over Missouri Valley College in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split with Missouri Valley College Friday afternoon at Himsl Field in Canton, Mo.

In the first game, the Vikings plated two runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and snap a 22-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Wildcats.

In the deciding fifth inning of game two, C-SC came to bat trailing 1-0 with only two hits to show for the first four innings. However, the Wildcats registered five hits to overtake the Vikings, who scored their only run in the fourth inning.

Lauren Ferguson opened the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second by Myah Briese. Hunter Huddle then reached on an error by the MVC shortstop to put runners at the corners.

Pinch runner Mackenzie Tome stole second before Paige Kurfman singled behind second base to score Ferguson and tie the game.

Tiffany Lepic walked to load the bases and, after a fielder's choice forced out Tome on home plate, Ryley Pecina delivered a single up the middle to plate Kurfman for a 2-1 C-SC lead.

The next batter, Lacey Stamper, then cleared the bases with a three-run double to make the score 5-1. Cierra Bush doubled home Stamper to account for the final run of the inning.

Sophie Stuart scattered six hits and allowed just one run to earn her fifth victory of the season. Stuart walked two and struck out two. Stamper and Ferguson led the offense with two hits each.

In the first game, C-SC and the Vikings were tied 2-2 when the Wildcats scored an unearned run in the sixth inning  to take a 3-2 lead.

However, MVC tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a RBI double before scoring the eventual game-winning run when the Wildcats committed an error with two outs.

The Wildcats had nine hits overall in the game with Payton Todd collecting two hits and two runs batted in. Pecina also had two hits for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play their final regular season games Saturday, April 26, against Mount Mercy University at Himsl Field. The first game of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
