Wildcats Suffer First Loss at Hands of Iowa Wesleyan

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team shot a season-low 37 percent from the field in suffering a 67-62 loss to Iowa Wesleyan University Tuesday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats (3-1) opened the game by making just four of their first 14 shots in the first quarter and trailed 19-12 after 10 minutes. The shooting accuracy improved in the second period to 44 percent, C-SC still trailed 35-30 at the intermission.

The Tigers expanded their lead to 56-42 with a strong third period that saw the visitors outscore the Wildcats 21-12. However, a furious rally in the final period pulled the Wildcats to within 65-62 with under 10 seconds remaining, but two free throws by Isabell West with 0.8 left sealed the victory.

C-SC was able to close the gap and keep the game close by forcing 23 Tiger turnovers, leading to 29 C-SC points. Despite the shooting woes, the Wildcats also drained a season-high 12 3-pointers in the game, shooting 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Avery Oetting and McKenzie Lathrom were the catalysts for the Wildcats behind the 3-point stripe, each registering four 3-pointers each in the game.

Oetting finished with a career-high 21 points off the bench, shooting seven-of-14 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Lathrom added 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting overall and 4-for 9 from the arc. Lathrom also contributed six assists and seven steals in the game.

C-SC was out-rebounded for the third straight game with Iowa Wesleyan holding a 39-26 edge. The Tigers also pulled down 12 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second chance points. IWU also outscored the Wildcats 15-6 from the foul line.

Neviaiah Bell Tenner grabbed five rebounds to lead the Wildcats on the glass. Oetting added four caroms, while Oetting and Aaliyah Ortiz garnered three steals each to join Lathrom as the only players with multiple steals in the game.

C-SC returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 19, with a road game at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
