Late Burst in Second Quarter Lifts Wildcats to Road Victory at William Woods

An 18-2 run in the final minutes of the second quarter helped the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team post an easy 67-47 victory over William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats started off slow, making just two of their first 17 field goal attempts in the first quarter, and trailed after 10 minutes 10-8.

The Owls built the lead to 19-16 on a basket wit 4:30 to play in the first half half when the Wildcats found a rhythm.

Nevaiah Bell-Tenner started the run with a basket with 4:10 left in the half. Then a steal by Bell-Tenner and a 3-pointer by McKenzie Lathrom on the ensuing possession gave the Wildcats a 21-19 lead. 

Two free throws from Aaliyah Ortiz and a 3-pointer from Bell-Tenner upped the lead to 26-19 with three minutes to play.

William Woods stopped the bleeding momentarily with a basket to end C-SC's 10-0 run; however, Lathrom drained another 3-pointer and then stole the ball and fed Avery Oetting for a basket to give the Wildcats a 31-21 advantage.

Ortiz added two more free throws with 90 seconds left in the half, and Lathrom split a pair of free throws with 14 ticks left gave the visitors a 34-21 lead at the break.

C-SC forced 16 Owl turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to 13 points by the Wildcats in the half. Overall, C-SC forced 22 Owl miscues while committing 14 of their own for a 25-10 advantage in points scored.

Lathrom and Bell-Tenner scored 16 points each to lead the Wildcats offensively. Lathrom added a game-high six assists and also had three rebounds and three steals.

Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan nearly registered a double-double off the bench, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Ortiz played a great floor game with four rebounds, four assists, a game-high four steals and three blocked shots.

The Wildcats (4-1) are scheduled to play this Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
