Grand View Dials Long Distance in Upending Wildcats
A second quarter barrage of 3-pointers in the second quarter helped Grand View University to a 76-59 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team Wednesday night at Charles Field House.
The Vikings trailed the Wildcats 18-16 after one period before the visitors from Des Moines, Iowa, found the range from outside the 3-point arc.
Grand View shot 56 percent (9-16) from the field in the second quarter, including making seven of 10 long range bombs from the arc. C-SC, by contrast, went ice cold from the field and connected on just 3 off 11 from the field (27 percent) to be outscored 25-10 in the quarter and trailed 41-28 at halftime.
Grand View finished the game by shooting 52 percent from the 3-point stripe overall, with 14 of its 27 total field goals coming from long range. The Wildcats were a respectable 38 percent (8-21) from distance; however, shot just 37 percent (19-51) overall.
Aaliyah Ortiz continued to put up all-conference numbers this season, leading the Wildcats with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. Ortiz was 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-4 from the 3-point arc, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
McKenzie Lathrom also reached double figures for the Wildcats, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds and a team-best three steals.
C-SC, now 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference, is scheduled to host MidAmerica Nazarene University this Saturday, Jan. 7, inside Charles Field House. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. The Pioneers improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the league with a 48-45 road victory at Park University Wednesday night.
