Wildcats Can't Overcome 21-2 Clarke Run in Home Defeat

Clarke University used a 21-2 first half run to break away from the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team and earn a 66-50 victory Wednesday night at Charles Field House.

McKenzie Lathrom drilled a 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 14-12 lead over the visiting Pride.

However, Clarke tied the game with two seconds left and then a turnover by the Wildcats, a foul and two free throws with three-tenths of a second remaining in the quarter gave the Pride a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes.

Clarke, ranked eighth in the NAIA Top 25, then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and seven of the following nine points to take a commanding 33-16 lead. The Pride outscored C-SC 19-8 in the quarter and led 35-22 at halftime.

The Wildcats forced 22 turnovers in the loss, registering 15 steals in the game. However, C-SC also committed 16 turnovers and held just a 17-14 edge on points scored off those miscues.

Lathrom led the Wildcats with 11 points while Katie Webb chipped in with 10 markers. Aaliyah Ortiz and Kiana Ortiz added seven points each with Aaliyah also leading the home team with five steals in the game.

C-SC, now 15-8 overall and 10-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to play at Evangel University this Saturday, Feb. 4, in Springfield, Mo. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
