Evangel's Big Fourth Quarter Shocks Wildcats in Final Seconds

Evangel University scored 34 fourth quarter points to overcome a 16-point deficit and defeat the Culver-Stockton women's basketball team 74-73 at the Ashcroft Center in Springfield, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats built a business-like lead over the first three quarters as they tried to sweep the season series from the Valor. C-SC led 18-14 after one quarter, 34-27 at halftime and 56-40 after three quarter before the tide turned.

C-Sc went cold from the field in the final 10 minutes while Evangel heated up. The Wildcats made three of 12 shots in the quarter while the Valor was 12 for 22. The Wildcats did go 10-for-16 from the free throw line in the quarter, but missed some shots late that came back to haunt them.

Trailing 73-71 with six seconds left, Evangel, which outscored the Wildcats 34-17 in the fourth period, completed the comeback when Micah Clayton scored while being fouled with nine-tenths of a second remaining. Clayton drained the free throw to give the Valor the victory.

Three players scored in double figures to lead the Wildcat offensive attack with McKenzie Lathrom scoring 14 points to lead the way. Avery Oetting added 13 markers, while Katie Webb chipped in 12 points.

Lathrom also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists, both team highs, while also registering two steals. Webb garnered five rebounds and Oetting had three assists and two steals.

The Wildcats, now 15-9 overall and 10-8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to play their final road game of the 2022-23 campaign this Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Mount Mercy University. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
