Wildcats Can't Overcome Poor Shooting Night in Season-Opening Loss to Columbia

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team got off to a nightmarish start to the season Friday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats made just three of their 27 field goal attempts in the first half en route to a 62-49 loss to Columbia College in the second game of the Atrium on Third Classic.

C-SC shot just 2-for-14 in the first quarter as the Cougars jumped out to a 17-5 lead after 10 minutes. Things got worse in the second quarter as the Wildcats connected on just one of their 13 field attempts allowing the Cougars to grab a 32-13 lead at the break.

The Wildcats, playing without a pair of starters, continued to struggle in the third quarter before finally finding the range in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 21-12 in the quarter. C-SC finished the game shooting 25 percent from the floor.

The one bright spot for the Wildcats was their free throw shooting where they drained 14 of their 16 attempts from the stripe.

Katie Webb and Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan each finished 13 points to lead C-SC in scoring. Webb added a team-best 10 rebounds to secure the double-double.

Aaliyah Ortiz managed six points but played a fine floor game with a game-high eight assists and five steals.

The Wildcats will attempt to shake off the first game disappointment when they play host to Hannibal-LaGrange University Saturday night in t he final game of the Classic. Game time is 7 p.m. at Charles Field House. The Trojans fell to Missouri Valley College 88-60 in Friday's first game.
