Benedictine Slips Past Wildcats in Overtime

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team was outscored 15-13 in overtime by Benedictine College in an 81-79 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium in Atchison, Kan.

The Wildcats forced the extra period when Nevaiah Bell-Tenner drove the baseline and dropped in a basket with 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game 66.

In the overtime, the two teams traded leads throughout the first two minutes of the five minute extra session. 

Trailing 73-72 at the three minute mark, the Wildcats got a 3-pointer by Avery Oetting and a basket by Addison Newbon over the next minute to give C-SC a 77-73 lead with two minutes remaining.

However, the Ravens scored eight straight points and the Wildcats recorded four turnovers in the final 90 seconds to allow Benedictine to regain the lead.

Even then, C-SC had a chance in the final seconds.

Benedictine missed two free throws with nine seconds left leading 81-79. After a scramble on the rebound led to a jump ball that gave possession to C-SC with 5.9 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats went the length of the court, but a 3-point attempt by Aaliyah Ortiz was wide as the buzzer sounded to end the game.

Oetting and Newbon were outstanding in defeat.

Oetting led the Wildcats with 24 points. Oetting was 8-for-16 from the field, including 6-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. Newbon finished with a season-high 21 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Newbon was 7-for-11 from the field.

Ortiz was the third Wildcat to reach double figures, finishing with 10 markers. Ortiz also dished out a a game-best eight assists. Bell-Tenner garnered nine points and five assists.

The Wildcats begin a three-game homestead on Wednesday, Dec. 6, against Graceland University at Charles Field House. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
