Ortiz's Late Basket Lifts Wildcats Over Graceland

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team earned a come-from-behind 59-57 victory over Graceland University Wednesday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats trailed 58-57 after the Yellowjackets' Alana Swift made a layup with 90 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

C-SC turned the ball over on its ensuing possession with 65 seconds remaining; however, a blocked shot by Addison Newbon and a defensive rebound by Delaney Straus gave the Wildcats possession with 36 ticks left.

With 17 seconds left, Aaliyah Ortiz drove to the basket and made a short jumper to give the Wildcats a 58-57 lead.

After a Graceland timeout, Kymani Freeman, who had made four 3-pointers in the game, missed a trey with four seconds left and Newbon grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining.

Newbon made the second of two free throws and the Yellowjackets failed to get off a shot attempt to account for the final score.

The Wildcats scored the first six points of the game but still trailed 17-11 after one period. The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 34-27 at the intermission, outscoring the hosts 17-16 in the 2nd quarter.

C-SC made its move in the third quarter, holding Graceland to seven points in the period, but still trailed 41-39 after three quarters.

Newbon and Ortiz recorded double-doubles for the Wildcats with Newbon leading the way with 13 points and 12 rebounds. It was Newbon's second career double-double.

Ortiz registered her fourth career double-double and the first of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ortiz also dished out a team-high four assists.

The Wildcats, now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to host 23rd-ranked Grand View University this Saturday, Dec. 9, at Charles Field House. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
