Fourth-Ranked Clarke Races Past Wildcats

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team played with fourth ranked Clarke University for the first eight minutes before the Pride attack became too much to overcome in a 92-62 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss Wednesday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats, playing with two starters due to injury, trailed 13-9 in the first quarter before a 6-0 run gave the hosts a 15-13 lead on a free throw by Haley Webb with 2:14 to play in the opening period.

However, the Pride drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to grab a 16-15 lead and finished the quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 24-15 after the initial 10 minutes.

Clarke continued its assault in the second and third quarters, outscoring the undermanned Wildcats 47-27 in those two periods combined. The Pride connected on 20 of their 30 field goal attempts (67%) in the two middle quarters. Each team garnered 21 points in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

The visitors finished the night shooting 60 percent from the field, including 61.1 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. The Pride made 11 3-pointers in the game.

The Wildcats did get a superb game from junior Katie Webb, who was the only C-SC player in double figures with a season-high 22 points. Webb, who missed her career high by just one point, was 8-for-18 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Ashton Bowers and Aaliyah Ortiz each netted nine points in the game with Ortiz also garnering team highs in steals (3) while Nevaiah Bell-Tenner dished out five assists. The nine points by Bowers was a career-high. Milliana Mozee-Williams also registered three steals for the Wildcats.

C-SC concludes the first semester schedule this Saturday, Dec. 16, with a road contest at Peru State College in Peru, Neb. Game time is slated for noon at the Al Wheeler Activity Center.
