Wildcats End First Semester with Road Loss at Peru State

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team concluded its first semester schedule with a 67-60 loss to Peru State College at the Al Wheeler Activity Center in Peru, Neb., Saturday afternoon.

A horrific second quarter doomed the Wildcats, who had entered the game looking to snap a two-game losing streak.

Trailing 16-11 after the first quarter, C-SC was outscored 18-6 in the second 10 minute period and trailed 34-17 at the intermission. The Wildcats made just 3 of their 14 shot attempts in the quarter, including missing all five 3-point attempts.

C-SC shot 26 percent from the field in the first half, going 7-for-26 from the field overall and 1-for-9 from the 3-point arc. The Wildcats also committed 12 of their 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Wildcats put on a valiant comeback effort in the second half, outscoring the hosts 43-33 in the second half, including 18-10 in the third quarter, to make it a game. However, the Bobcats drained 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Addison Newbon, who missed the Wednesday's game against Clarke with a nagging injury, came off the bench to score a season-high 23 points to lead the Wildcats. No other C-SC player reached double figures with Nevaiah Bell-Tenner and Delaney Straus coming close with eight points each.

Bell-Tenner and Straus also shared team rebounding honors with eight caroms each, while Aaliyah Ortiz dished out a team-best five assists and Straus had three steals.

The Wildcats, who end the first semester with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Mount Mercy University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
