Wildcats Force 27 Turnovers in Victory over William Penn

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team forced a season-high 27 turnovers in an 84-58 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over William Penn University at Charles Field House Wednesday night.

Of those 27 turnovers, the Wildcats registered a season-best 18 steals in the game and turned those miscues into 40 points. On the offensive end, C-SC committed a season-low nine turnovers, leading to 15 points by the Statesmen.

The Wildcats shot 54 percent from the field, making a season-high 37 field goals in the game. C-SC led 23-14 after one quarter, 44-29 at halftime and 67-37 at the end of three quarters.

Four players reached double figures for the Wildcats with Nevaiah Bell-Tenner scoring a season-high 20 points. Katie Webb added 12 points and Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan contributed 11 markers off the bench.

Aaliyah Ortiz also scored in double figures with 11 points but fell short of a triple double with nine assists and seven steals.

The Wildcats, who swept the season series for the third straight season, improves to 6-12 overall and 5-9 in the Heart. William Penn falls to 3-17 and 2-14 in the league.

GAME NOTES:

  • Wednesday's victory was Head Coach Janette Burgin's 150th career victory. Burgin is 150-155 in 11 seasons at Culver-Stockton.
  • The Wildcats are now 5-4 at Charles Field House this season.
  • Ortiz has registered five or more assists in 10 games this season and 24 games in her career. Ortiz entered Wednesday's game leading the Heart in assists, averaging 5.35 per game.
  • The seven steals by Ortiz tied her career-high, which she has accomplished two other times.
  • Avery Oetting dished out a season-high five assists in the victory.
  • The Wildcats registered a season-high 27 assists in the game.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats will play the third game of a four-game homestead this Saturday, Jan. 27, against Peru State College at Charles Field House. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
