Wildcats Record Season High 20 Steals in Rout of Peru State

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team recorded a season-high 20 steals in an 83-41 victory over Peru State College at Charles Field House Saturday afternoon.

The 20 steals led to 26 Bobcat turnovers and 41 points off those miscues by the Wildcats. Aaliyah Ortiz led the theft ring with four steals while three other players, Avery Oetting, Olivia Hoop, and Bailey Berry had three steals each. 

Ortiz was spectacular in every way Saturday, registering her fifth career double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. In addition to the steals, Ortiz also had five rebounds and three blocks. The 20 points is a season-high for Ortiz, while the 10 assists and three blocks matched season-highs.

Addison Newbon, who just returned from an injury on Wednesday, came off the bench to net a game-high 21 points. Hopp and Nevaiah Bell-Tenner just missed double figures with eight points each.

The Wildcats grabbed a season-high 53 rebounds in the game and held a 53-36 edge in that category. C-SC had a 17-6 advantage in second chance points. Oetting grabbed a career and game-high 12 caroms.

The Wildcats were never threatened in the game, taking a 23-5 lead after the first quarter. C-SC led 38-20 at halftime and 61-29 at the end of three quarters.

The victory improves the Wildcats to 7-12 overall and 6-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Bobcats drop to 9-12 overall and 6-11 in the Heart.

GAME NOTES:

  • Newbon reached double figures for the 27th time in her career, and scored 20 or more points for the sixth time in her career.
  • Ortiz scored in double figures for the a team-best 34th time Saturday.
  • The Wildcats grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in the game, a season-high.
  • The three steals by Berry were a career-high.
  • The Wildcats will go for their third straight victory this Monday, Jan. 29, when they host Park University at Charles Field House. Game time is 5:30 p.m. This a makeup from the Jan. 13 date that was postponed due to inclement weather.
