Wildcats Suffocate Pirates to Earn Third Straight Victory

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team posted its third straight victory with a 78-50 decision over Park University at Charles Field House Monday night.

The Wildcats have dominated on the defensive side in the three victories, holding the last three opponents an average of 44.7 points per game and 29.8 percent shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Wildcats have averaged 80.3 points per game offensively.

Against Park, the Wildcats got off to a fast start and led 21-11 after the first quarter. The Wildcats shot 66.7 percent (10-15) from the field in the quarter. C-SC cooled off in the second quarter offensively; however, the defense stayed suffocating, holding to Park three field goals in the quarter to take a38-18 lead to the halftime locker room.

In the second half, C-SC outscored the Pirates 40-32 in the second half to keep a good distance between them. C-SC ended the game shooting 52 percent overall form the field.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Avery Oetting who finished with a game-high 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting. She was 5-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc. Oetting also had four assists and three steals.

Addison Newbon came off the bench and added 18 points for the Wildcats. Newbon went 6-for-8 from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. 

Aaliyah Ortiz, who was named the WinWon Heart of America Athletic Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, contributed seven points and team highs in rebounds (5), assists (8) and blocks (3).

The victory improves the Wildcats to 8-12 overall and 7-9 in the Heart. The Wildcats are scheduled to play at nationally-ranked Clarke University this Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Dubuque, Iowa. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

  • Despite the 28 point victory, the Wildcats allowed a season-high 17 offensive rebounds to Park. The Pirates took advantage, holding a 12-6 edge on second chance points.
  • Ortiz recorded three blocks for the third time season, a season-high for the Wildcats.
  • The Wildcats are 5-1 in games decided by 20 or more points.
