Women's Basketball Falls Behind Early, Drops Home Game to Benedictine

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team suffered a 67-52 loss to Benedictine College at Charles Field House Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats only led twice in the game with the last lead being 6-4 on a basket by Katie Webb with 6:30 left in the first quarter. The Ravens drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession and never trailed the rest of the game.

Benedictine led 17-13 after the first quarter and 36-26 at the intermission. The Ravens outscored the Wildcats 19-8 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 55-34 after three quarters.

C-SC was out-rebounded 43-19 overall, including 14-5 on the offensive end leading to a 15-4 edge on second chance points. The Wildcats did force 19 Raven turnovers, but managed to score just 16 points off those miscues.

Whynter Waterhouse-Brennan came off the bench to score a team-best 14 points to lead the Wildcats. Olivia Hopp added 11 markers, which matched her career-high. Webb just missed double figures with nine points.

Avery Oetting was held to six points, but did damage in other ways by leading the Wildcats with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. 

The Wildcats, now 8-14 overall and 7-11 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to play at Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, Feb. 7, in Marshall, Mo. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

  • The 19 total rebounds was a season low for the Wildcats. The previous low was 23 at Shawnee State (Ohio) on Nov. 10.
  • The five offensive rebounds and the 14 defensive rebounds by the Wildcats were also season lows.
  • Oetting's five assists tied her season-high.
