Women's Basketball Stays in Hunt for Postseason Berth

CANTON, Mo. — The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team stayed in the hunt for a postseason berth with a 69-60 senior day victory over Baker University Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House in Canton, Mo.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Wildcats are tied with Peru State College (Neb.) for the eighth and final playoff spot with a 9-13 conference record. Graceland (Iowa) and Park (Mo.) are a game back with 8-14 records.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play at Graceland Wednesday night in Lamoni, Iowa, and then finishes the regular season with a game at Park in Parkville, Mo., on Saturday, Feb. 24. Peru State plays at Baker Wednesday before hosting league front-runner Clarke (Iowa) next Saturday.

The Wildcats had lost two straight games at Charles Field House before Saturday's victory over the cellar-dweller in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

C-SC led 20-19 after one quarter and 36-35 at halftime before outscoring the visitors 33-25 in the second half, including 20-14 in the fourth quarter.

Addison Newbon, starting for the first time since before Christmas, made nine of her 14 field goal attempts en route a team-high 20 points to lead the Wildcats. Katie Webb came off the bench to net 18 points, helping the Wildcats to a 27-7 edge in bench points.

C-SC also had a big advantage from the free throw line, outscoring Baker 18-4 from the foul stripe, The Wildcats were 18-for-20 on free shots, while Baker was just four of six.

For the third time this season, Aaliyah Ortiz dished out 10 assists to guide the Wildcat offensive attack. Ortiz also had three steals and two blocks in the game to go along with three points.

The Wildcats also out-rebounded the guests 37-35 in the game with Nevaiagh Bell-Tenner grabbing eight caroms while Newbon had seven rebounds.

C-SC, now 10-16 overall, will play at Graceland Wednesday night with tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

  • The Wildcats finished with an 8-6 record at home this season. 
  • It was the seventh time in her career Addison Newbon has scored 20 or more points in a game.
  • It was the the 30th time in her career, Aaliyah Ortiz had at least five assists in a game.
  • The 90 percent (18-20) shooting from the free throw line was a season high. 
  • The nine turnovers by the Wildcats matched their season-low. C-SC also had nine turnovers in a victory over William Penn on Jan. 24.
