Three Wildcats Named to All-Heart Women's Basketball Team

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team placed three players on the All-Heart of America Athletic Conference team as the league announced its award winners Friday morning. The team was selected by a vote of league coaches.

Guard Aaliyah Ortiz was named to the second team while guard Avery Oetting and forward Addison Newbon were honorable mention selections.

Ortiz, a 5-foot-6 graduate student from Tucson, Ariz. (Palo Verde HS / Pima CC), played in all 28 games for the Wildcats this season, starting 26 of them. She averaged 9.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 80.2 percent from the free throw line. In addition, Ortiz led the Heart in assists (5.96/game), was third in steals (3.04/game) and was eighth in blocked shots (1.00/game).

Ortiz scored in double figures in 14 games this season, including three 20-point games during the year. Ortiz also registered two double-doubles and had 17 games where she recorded at least five assists in a game, including three games with 10 assists or better. In addition, her 167 assists during the season were the sixth-highest season total in team history. This was the second All-Heart honor for Ortiz, who was an honorable mention pick in 2023.

Oetting, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Hallsville, Mo. (Hallsville HS), earned honorable mention accolades for the second straight season. The 2023 Heart Freshman of the Year was the only Wildcat to play and start all 28 games this season. She averaged 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.96 assists and 2.36 steals per game. Oetting shot 39.6 percent from the field, including 38.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, and 89.7 percent (52-58) from the free throw line.

Oetting posted double figures in scoring in 12 of her 28 games, including four games of 20 or more points. She scored a career-high 26 points at Shawnee (Ohio) State on Nov. 10 and had a career-best 12 rebounds against Peru State (Neb.) on Jan. 27. Her 54 3-pointers this year are the seventh most in a season in school history.

Newbon, a 5-foot-8 forward from Decatur, Ill. (MacArthur HS), only appeared in 20 of the 28 games played by the Wildcats but averaged 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game overall. Newbon, who was an honorable mention selection in 2022 as a freshman, connected on 51.7 percent (89-172) of her field goal attempts, which was sixth-best in the league. She also made 83.9 percent (52-62) of her free throw attempts, which was seventh in the Heart.

Newbon reached double figures in scoring in 12 of her 20 games this season, netting 20 or more points five times, including a season-high 26 against Park (Mo.) on Feb. 24. Newbon also had seven games of seven or more rebounds and registered one double-double during the campaign.

The Wildcats ended the 2023-24 campaign with an 11-17 overall record, finishing in a four-way tie for seventh place in the 13-team conference with a 10-14 league mark.
