Wildcats Outlast Benedictine in Overtime to Claim Eighth Straight Home Victory

The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team continued its winning ways on its home court with a thrilling 64-61 overtime victory over Benedictine College Monday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats outscored the Ravens, who are receiving in the votes in the NAIA national poll, 7-4 in the extra period to earn its eighth straight victory on the home court. 

Tied at 57 at the end of regulation, the Wildcats drew first blood in the extra session when Avery Oetting drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing. That basket gave the Wildcats a 60-57 lead they would never relinquish.

The Ravens pulled to within 60-59 with 3:36 to play; however, Elizabeth Reed scored on a driving layup with 2:09 left to up the lead to 62-59.

Benedictine, which went 1-for-9 from the field in the overtime, missed four straight shots over the next two minutes while the Wildcats were unable to add to their lead over the same period.

C-SC's Katie Webb was fouled on a defensive rebound with 14 seconds left and split a pair of free throws to give C-SC a four-point lead.

Benedictine missed again with five seconds left and Misora Nambara capped off her career night by making one of two free throws to up the lead to 64-59. Benedictine netted two free throws with three-tenths of a second left to account for the final score.

In regulation, the Wildcats led 30-25 at halftime and registered the biggest lead of the game of 10 points at 37-27 by scoring seven of the first nine point of the third quarter.

However, the Ravens went on a 12-0 run to take a 39-37 lead and the two teams battled back-in-forth with the lead before the Ravens' Lauryn Dubbert drained a 3-pointer at the third quarter to give Benedictine a 45-42 lead entering the final 10 minutes.

The Ravens posted their biggest lead of the game of five points at 49-44 with seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 55-49 lead. 

Benedictine clawed its way back into the game with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 57 apiece with 80 seconds remaining.

Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but the Ravens missed three shots while the Wildcats missed one shot and turned the bal over one time.

Nambara finished the night with a career-high 22 points on 9-for-17 shooting. Nambara's previous high was 21 points at Clarke on Dec. 3. She also dished out a team high five assists.

Oetting recorded her second career double-doubles with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Haley Webb came off the bench to net a career-best 13 points with 10 of the 13 coming in the first half.

Each team made 23 field goals and eight 3-pointers in the game but the difference in the game game at the would line where C-SC outscored the visitors 10-7. 

The Wildcats improve to 10-6 overall and 7-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference while Benedictine drops to 12-3 overall and 9-2 in the league. 

The Wildcats are scheduled to play their next two games on the road beginning Saturday, Jan. 18, at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Game time is set for 12 p.m. C-SC defeated Baker 82-72 back on Nov. 23 in Canton.
