Poor Fourth Quarter Leads to Another Road Defeat for Wildcats

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team was held to a season low 55 points in a 62-55 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Graceland University Wednesday night in Lamoni, Iowa.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-8 overall and evens their conference record to 7-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. C-SC falls to 2-7 on the road this season, including 0-7 in league play.

Leading 46-40 entering the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were held to four field goals and nine points while allowing 22 points to the Yellowjackets to see their record fall to 7-3 when leading after three periods. The 22 second half points scored by the Wildcats was also a season low.

The C-SC defense relied on a strong defensive effort through the first three quarters to build their lead. The Wildcats registered 15 steals and forced 19 Graceland turnovers, leading to 24 points, through 30 minutes of play. However, the Yellowjackets didn't have a turnover in the final quarter while C-SC committed six of its 15 turnovers in the final 10 minutes.

The Wildcats led 16-14 after one quarter and 33-28 at the intermission. C-SC built its biggest lead of the game, 13 points, with an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to lead 43-30. The Wildcats held the Yellowjackets scoreless for over four minutes during the run.

However, the Yellowjackets outscored the visitors 10-3 over the final three minutes of the quarter to get within six points and grab the momentum heading to the final quarter.

Avery Oetting was the only Wildcat to reach double figures for the Wildcats, netting 16 points on 6-of-11 accuracy, including 4-of-6 from the 3-point arc. Olivia Hopp was next with nine markers.

Katie Webb grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats in that category. Misora Nambara dished out a team-high five assists while Nambara and Oetting recorded six steals each, which equaled a career-high for Oetting and was a career-high for Nambara.

C-SC is scheduled to be back on the home hardwood this Saturday, Jan. 25, when it hosts Grand View University at Charles Field House. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
