Women's Basketball Falters in Fourth Quarter; Splits Season Series with Mount Mercy
For the second straight road game, a poor fourth quarter cost the Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team a chance at victory in a Heart of America Athletic Conference game.
Mount Mercy University outscored the Wildcats 26-11 in the final 10 minutes to overcome a 51-44 deficit and pick up a 70-62 victory at the Hennessey Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Thursday night.
C-SC, which trailed 35-31 at halftime, used a huge offensive third quarter to build its lead heading the final period. The Wildcats outscored the hosts 20-9 in the quarter to take a seven-point lead.
However, like Saturday's loss at Benedictine that saw the Ravens outscore the Wildcats 28-9 in the final period after entering the frame tied at 40, C-SC made just five of its 15 shot attempts (33.3 percent) while the Mustangs seemingly couldn't miss, going 10-for-12 in the quarter from the field.
The loss is just the third this season for the Wildcats when leading after three quarters. C-SC is now 8-3 in such situations. Mount Mercy is the fourth opponent to shoot 50 percent or more from the field, finishing at 52 percent for the game. The opponent holds a 3-1 edge against the Wildcats when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.
Misora Nambara paced the Wildcat offense attack with 18 points while Haley Webb came off the bench to add 11 markers. Haley's sister, Katie Webb, was also in double figures with 10 points.
Avery Oetting just missed reaching double figures, finishing with nine points, a team-high four assists, and five rebounds. Abagail Mooney led C-SC with a career-high six caroms.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play their final home game of the 2024-25 campaign this Saturday, Feb. 15, against MidAmerica Nazarene University at Charles Field House. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
