Vomund Nets Three Goals but Wildcats Fall to Ottawa in Lacrosse Opener
The Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team began its fourth season of competition with a 14-7 loss to Ottawa University Monday night in Ottawa, Kan.
The Wildcats battled the Braves to a near draw in the first half despite being out-shot 19-10. Ottawa scored in the final four minutes of the half to take a 6-4 lead to the locker room.
C-SC started the second half with a goal on its first shot of the half to pull within 6-5. However, that was the only shot the Wildcats would register in the quarter and the Braves netted four goals on nine shots to take a 10-5 lead to the final period.
Ottawa added four more unanswered goals before the Wildcats notched their two final goals to account for the final score.
The Braves held a 36-17 edge in shots and a 30-24 advantage on ground balls. The Wildcats were 14-for-21 on clears while the Braves were 21-for-26. The Braves controlled 13 of the 24 draws in the match.
Sopheea Vomund led the Wildcat offensive attack three goals on four shots. McKayla Nevarez added two goals while Melanie Sanchez and Erin Bodine recorded one goal each.
The score could have been really lop-sided if not for the play of goalie Jillian Vervynck, who made 15 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
C-SC (0-1) is slated to play again tis Wednesday, March 8, at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
