Lacrosse Finds Offensive Touch A Little Too Late in Loss to William Penn

The Culver-Stockton women's lacrosse team found its offense a little too late in a 17-9 loss to William Penn University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Wildcats started slowly and trailed 4-0 after the first quarter and 9-3 at halftime. C-SC finally found the offensive answer in the second half, scoring six times, but it wasn't enough to overcome the first half struggles.

Melanie Sanchez, Sopheea Vomund and McKayla Nevarez scored two goals each for the Wildcats, who had seven different players net a goal in the game. C-SC, which set a school record with 11 assists in Thursday's victory over St. Mary (Kan.), did not record an assist in Saturday's defeat at William Penn.

The Statesmen outshot the Wildcats 30-22 in the game; however, C-SC was more efficient with its shot opportunities, putting 17 of those 22 shots on goal compared to 21 of 30 for William Penn.

Vomund and Sanchez each had six shots in the game with Sanchez putting all six of her shots on target.

The Wildcats, now 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Heart, is scheduled to play a non-conference match at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy this Monday, March 27, in St. Louis. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m.
