Quarles Ties School Record with Eight Goals against Mount Mercy

Kaelin Quarles' outstanding freshman season continued Friday as the attacker from Nevada tied Culver-Stockton's school record for goals in a game with eight in a 17-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Mount Mercy University at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

Quarles, who also added two assists for a total of 10 points, matched the mark set by Melanie Sanchez against St. Mary's (Kan.) on March 23, 2023. Quarles' 31 total goals this season is just three goals shy of the season record of 34 by Sopheea Vomund set last season.

Mount Mercy, a first year program, controlled the opening draw and grabbed the lead just 59 seconds into the game.

However, the Wildcats answered with six goals in the first quarter and seven more in the second quarter to go to halftime leading 13-1. C-SC outshot the Mustangs 23-5 in the first half and finished the game with a 31-14 edge overall.

Fellow freshman Lauren Grebing turned in a fine game of her own, garnering five goals and three assists for eight total points.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Vervynck stood tall between the pipes, making 11 saves on 12 shots on goal in the final home game of the season.

The Wildcats were able to gain possession throughout the match, holding a 13-7 advantage in draws and a 35-23 edge in ground balls.

C-SC, now 4-5 overall, returns to action this Sunday, April 7, when it travels to Fremont, Neb., to face Midland University in a non-conference game. The opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
