Wildcats Hold Off Midland 10-9; Quarles Sets Single-Season Goals Mark

The Culver-Stockton College women's lacrosse team withstood a late rally by Midland University to post a 10-9 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon in Fremont, Neb.

The Wildcats built a 7-3 halftime lead on the strength of four goals from Kaelin Quarles and two tallies from Lauren Grebing as the Wildcats outshot the Warriors 16-6 in the opening 30 minutes of play.

However, Midland used a big third quarter to make it a game, netting three straight goals in the period before the Quarles recorded her fifth goal of the game with 2:27 to play in the period put the Wildcats up 8-6 heading to the final 15 minutes of action.

Quarles added her sixth and final goal of the game, with an assist from Bella Olson, five minutes into the final quarter to put C-SC up 9-6.

The Warriors answered with a goal of their own, but Grebing notched her third goal of the game with Quarles adding her third assist to give the Wildcats a three-goal advantage with 3:16 to play.

Midland's Anika Turner scored two goals, the last coming with 64 seconds remaining, to cut the deficit to 10-9. 

The Warriors controlled the ensuing draw and then Quarles was given a green card with 47 seconds remaining that allowed Midland to play a player up the rest of the the game.

Midland's chance to tie came seconds later on a Caitlin Bowers shot, but C-SC goalie Jillian Vervynck made a save to preserve the lead. Vervynck made five saves in the game.

The Warriors then committed a turnover and the Wildcats' Anaya Lopez picked up the ground ball to preserve the victory.

Quarles' six goals gives the freshman from Henderson, Nev., 37 goals on the season, breaking the single-season school record of 34 set by Sophia Vomund a year ago. Quarles still has two regular season games remaining.

The Wildcats outshot the hosts 23-20 and held a 16-7 edge on draw controls; however, the Warriors picked up 50 ground balls to the Wildcats' 39. C-SC committed 39 turnovers while forcing 34 Midland miscues. Olson led the way with three caused turnovers.

The Wildcats, now 5-5 overall, is slated to play at Saint Ambrose University this Wednesday, April 10, in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match in Davenport, Iowa. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
