Weihardt Scores Late Goal to Beat Missouri Baptist; Keep Wildcats Unbeaten

A goal by senior Ellie Wiehardt in the late stages of the game was all the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team needed to capture a 1-0 non-conference victory over Missouri Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

With the victory, the Wildcats stay unbeaten after three games overall and are 2-0 on home turf. C-SC is scheduled to play at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., this Wednesday, Sept. 6. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Wildcats outshoot the Spartans 5-3, both teams created several opportunities in the second half that made for an entertaining 45 minutes.

The Spartans nearly grabbed a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game when Madi Dunahue drilled a shot that was initially saved by C-SC goalkeeper Mackenzie Frizzell. Frizzell couldn't control the rebound and a mad scramble ensued with the Spartans getting off two more good shots with at least one those shots being cleared off the goal line by a Wildcat defender.

The winning sequence came after an unforced error by Missouri Baptist.

The Spartans had possession in the midfield area and pressure by the Wildcats forced the defense to retreat. A pass was made to the right wingback who tried to re-direct it to the goalkeeper. However, the re-direction pass ended up going over the goal line for a corner kick.

Maggie Tuxhorn sent the re-start to the middle of the penalty area where a MBU and a CSC player each tried to get their heads on it. The ball came directly to Wiehardt who settled and drilled a shot just under the crossbar.

Frizzell was stellar in her first action of the season after missing the first two games due to injury. Frizzell stopped all four shots directed at her on goal to record the first shutout of the season and the seventh shutout of her career, placing her fifth on the school's all-time list.

The Wildcats ended up holding a 13-11 advantage in overall shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. The Spartans were the more aggressive team with 11 fouls to the Wildcats' five. Both teams were called for one offside penalty.
