Strong Defensive Effort Helps Wildcats Rebound from First Loss

A strong defensive effort by the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team help the Wildcats rebound from its first loss of the season and earn a  1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Harris-Stowe State University Tuesday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

After a sluggish first half which saw the Wildcats outshot 5-3, C-SC took advantage of the few opportunities that came its way in the opening 45.

Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez made a long run down the right sideline before sending a cross into the six-yard box where two Wildcats were driving to the net.

The ball found the foot of freshman Abby Coleman, who re-directed the ball past the Hornet goalkeeper in the 33rd minute for her first collegiate goal.

C-SC made that goal stand up in the second half, with the defense not allowing a shot by the Hornets while putting 10 shots toward the Harris-Stowe goal. The Wildcats ended up outshooting the Hornets 13-5 in the game.

Mackenzie Frizzell was called upon to make just one save in the game for her third shutout of the season and the ninth shutout of her career.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to make it 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the second half when a foul was called inside the penalty area.

However, Daniela Sanchez hit the right post and the ball caromed out to keep it a one-goal game.

The Wildcats, now 5-1 overall, is slated to open Heart of America Athletic Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 16, at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
