Wildcats Rout Mount Mercy to Earn First Heart Victory

The Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team scored four first half goals en route to a 4-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Mount Mercy University Wednesday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Wildcats, who earned their first conference victory of the year, was in full control in the first half, out-shooting the Mustangs 14-2 in the half. C-SC ended the game with a 22-8 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Savannah Stauffer started the scoring in the 14th minute as the Wildcats put heavy pressure on the Mount Mercy defense. With a scrum in front of the Mustang net, Stauffer was able to sneak a loose ball past the opposing goalkeeper for the first goal the game.

A few minutes later, in the 18th minute, Stauffer sent a corner kick that appeared headed for the goal. Mount Mercy goalkeeper Emily Metaschik was ready to make the save, but a defender in front of her tried to clear and knocked the ball into the net for an own goal.

Seven minutes later another corner kick by Stauffer was re-directed, hit the cross bar and dropped straight down and appeared to be in the net. No call was made and Mikayla Gioia pushed the carom to the back of the net to make it 3-0.

The Wildcats make it 4-0 in the 38th minute when Grace Lauman re-directed a cross from Desiree Hensiek for her first goal of the year.

C-SC goalkeeper Mackenzie Frizzell registered her third straight shutout and her seventh shutout of the season, stopping all five shots she saw in the game.

The Wildcats, now 7-3-1 overall and 1-2-2 in the Heart, is scheduled to host Park University this Saturday, Oct. 7, at Poulton Stadium in a conference tilt. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. The Pirates defeated Graceland University 6-1 Wednesday night in Lamoni, Iowa.
