Late Penalty Kick Helps Women's Soccer Salvage Draw at Clarke

Morgan Dierks Machado scored the game-tying goal on a penalty kick with 2:46 remaining in regulation to give the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team a 2-2 tie at Clarke University Tuesday night in Dubuque, Iowa.

The Wildcats, trailing 2-1, were in desperation mode and forced three straight corner kicks in a span of 40 seconds. On the third corner, Maggie Tuxhorn's kick was cleared out; however, Savannah Stauffer was pushed down by a Clarke defender the box and a penalty was called.

Dierks Machado stepped up to take the penalty and buried the free kick low and to the right of Pride goalkeeper April Lashomb.

A frantic final 10 minutes of the first half resulted in the first three goals of the game being scored.

Clarke scored with exactly 10 minutes left in the half to break a scoreless tie; however, the Wildcats answered two minutes, four seconds later when a short pass from Dierks Machado found Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez. Chandler-Gutierrez took two steps and delivered a missile over the head of Lashomb to tithe game 1-1.

The Pride regained the lead just before in the final two minutes of the first half and held that lead until the Dierks Machado penalty kick late in the second half.

Mackenzie Frizzell made three saves, all in the second half, to keep the Wildcats within striking distance giving her teammates a chance to get the equalizer.

The Wildcats held a 15-13 advantage in shots with shots on goal being 8-5 in favor of the visitors. C-SC also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Wildcats, now 7-4-3 overall and 1-3-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to host Graceland University this Saturday, Oct. 14, at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
