Tuxhorn Nets Pair of Goals as Wildcats Earn Important Victory over William Penn

The Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team picked up a crucial victory over William Penn University Saturday morning in its quest to earn a berth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament.

The Wildcats, who currently sit in the eighth and final playoff spot with just a week remaining in the regular season, got two goals from Maggie Tuxhorn to earn a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Statesmen at Drost Field in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The victory improves the Wildcats to 3-3-3 in the Heart, just ahead of Baker University, which is 2-5-1. The Wildcats have two games remaining while Baker has three matches left, including Saturday night's game with Graceland.

All five goals in the contest with the Statesmen came in the first half.

The Wildcats struck first when Tuxhorn sent a corner kick to the front of the William Penn goal. The ball was initially cleared out of the goalbox, but Ellie Weihardt picked up the loose ball and passed it to Tuxhorn.

Not having a clear path to shoot because of a defender coming towards her, Tuxhorn made a little move around the oncoming defender, settled and blasted a shot over the outstretched arms of Statesmen goalkeeper Madeline Danielson for a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

Just more than two minutes later C-SC was on the attack again when Morgan Dierks Machado sent a cross just inside the penalty area at the top of the box. McKenna Little settled the pass, turned and drilled a shot past Danielson for a 2-0 C-SC lead just 14 minutes in.

The Statesmen answered with a goal in the 24th minute to cut the lead in half, and then added the equalizer in the 37th minute to square the contest at 2-2.

However, a caution awarded to a Statesmen player late in the first half help set up the game-winner for the Wildcats.

Tuxhorn sent the free kick near the sideline about 25 yards away. A host of C-SC and William Penn players diverged on the ball; but somehow no one was able to get to it and it bounced just in front and crossed the goal line for Tuxhorn's second goal of the game.

The Wildcats owned a 16-8 advantage in shots with C-SC recording a 13-2 edge in the first half. Facing a stiff wind in the second half, William Penn was able to outshoot the Wildcats 6-3, but only two of those shots were on goal and Mackenzie Frizzell made the save each time.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play their final regular season road game this Tuesday, Oct. 24, at nationally-ranked Central Methodist University. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Davis Field in Fayette, Mo.
