Chandler-Gutierrez Continues Hot Start; Defense Shuts Out Doane in Labor Day Tilt

Culver-Stockton College junior Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez continued her hot start to the season against Doane (Neb.) University in a non-conference match Monday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium in Canton, Mo.

On the same day she was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference's first Women's  Offensive Player of the Week for 2024, Chandler-Gutierrez scored the only goal of the game as the Wildcats upended the Tigers 1-0 to improve to 4-0 on the young season. It was Chandler-Gutierrez's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

After a scoreless first half, C-SC didn't waste much time taking the lead in the second half.

The winning play started with Wildcat goalkeeper Mackenzie Frizzell deep in Wildcat territory. Frizzell played the ball up the right sideline where it eventually found Lexi Clark

Clark sent a pass to Lola Weise who found Chandler-Gutierrez streaking toward toward the goal.

Chandler-Gutierrez gathered the pass and slid a slot under the left arm of the sliding Tiger goalkeeper for her third game-winning goal of the season.

Frizzell and the rest of the Wildcat defense made the one goal stand up to record the second shutout of the season. Frizzell made five saves in the game, including one right after C-SC's goal where she had to stretch high to bring down a Tiger shot.

The Wildcats outshot the visitors 17-6 in the game, putting 10 shots on goal. C-SC also had corner kicks in the game while not allowing a corner kick on defense.

C-SC is scheduled to play its third game in five days this Wednesday, Sept. 4, against Saint Ambrose University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Poulton Stadium.
