Women's Outdoor Track Shines on Opening Weekend of Competition

The Culver-Stockton women's track and field team began its outdoor season with an impressive showing at the Central Methodist Open Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Mo.

The Wildcats finished eighth or better in 12 events during the event with sprinter Shannon O'Neil and distance runner Faith Younce leading the way.

O'Neil started where she left off during the indoor season by dominating the hurdle events. O'Neil won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.01 and finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.59 seconds. The time in the 100 hurdles breaks the school record.

Younce had two finishes the top eight in two individual events and was also a member of the 4x400 relay, which placed third overall. Younce finished third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:43.93. Younce also placed eighth in the 3000-meter run, smashing the school record with a time of 12:21.95.

Malia Carmack, making her track and field debut for the season, placed eighth in both the 400-meter run and the pole vault. Her time in the 400 was 1:06.21 while her mark in the pole vault was 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches.

Kinlie Judd and Zoe Smith also participated in the pole vault and placed third and sixth, respectively. Judd posted a mark of 9 feet, 01/4 inches, tying the school record in the process, while Smith reached 8 feet 0 1/2 inches before. bowing out.

Delaney Straus, also making her track and field season debut, finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 11 inches.

The Wildcat relay 4x800 relay team won the event with a time of 11:18.42. Members of the team were Straus, Carmck, Morgan Keith and Smith.

The Wildcats will be in action again next Saturday, March 23, in the Viking Invitational at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
