Morris, Younce Hit Qualifying Mark in Race Walk

Allison Morris and Faith Younce hit automatic qualifying marks and Delaney Straus registered points in five different events to help the Culver-Stockton women's track and field team garner 90.5 points and place fifth at the Cornell Invitational Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Morris and Younce each eclipsed the school record in the 5000-meter race walk to earn automatic qualifying marks to qualify for the NAIA Outdoor Championships in May.

Morris won the event with a time of 27:56.22 to surpass the previous record of 28:53.87 set by Courtney Spann at the 2010 Washington Invitational. Younce placed second in the event with a time of 28:16.70.

Meanwhile, Straus captured one event, placed third in another event, finished fifth in two other events, and placed sixth in a fifth event.

Straus won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:21.53, and placed third in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.47. She finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.68 seconds, and in the high jump with a mark of four feet, 8 1/4 inches. She rounded out her day with a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.12 seconds.

In other events, Emma Berry set a personal best in the 300-meter steeplechase with a time of 14:22.22 to place sixth overall. Donyall Sharp set a personal best in the hammer throw for the third straight week and set a school record in the process with a throw of 134 feet, one inch. Petra Johnson placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 inches.

In the women's pole vault, the Wildcats finished second, third and sixth in the event. Zoi Smith placed second with a mark of 9 feet, 8 inches. Kinlie Judd placed third with a vault of 8 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and Malia Carmack placed sixth with a mark of 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

The Wildcats are scheduled to participate in the Mustang Distance Carnival and Open next Friday and Saturday, April 12-13 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Events start at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
