Wildcats Can't Complete Comeback in Loss to Mount Mercy

The Culver-Stockton women's volleyball team began a three-match end-of-season homestand with a five-set loss to Mount Mercy University Friday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats started fast and won the first set before the Mustangs took control in the second and third sets. C-SC raced to a 10-0 lead in the fourth set and then hung on to forced a decisive fifth set before Mount Mercy prevailed 21-25, 25-13, 25-14, 21-25, 15-10.

The loss drops the Wildcats, who have lost three straight matches, to 17-9 overall and 9-8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. C-SC is slated to host Clarke University tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29, where they will celebrate senior day. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at Charles Field House.

Heleine Filipe and Madison McClain paced the Wildcat offensive attack with 14 kills each. Abby Godwin and Cameron Prenter added seven and six terminations, respectively, off the bench. Lauren Bloom added a team-high 23 set assists, while McClain totaled three service aces.

Defensively, Veiauna Herman corralled 19 digs to lead the Wildcat back line. Kyla Ellis chipped in with 13 digs, while Bloom and McClain were limited to six each. Filipe registered two blocks.

The Mustangs garnered 59 kills and held a 59-47 edge in that category. Mount Mercy also used a solid service game to gain the advantage, recording 14 service aces in the match while C-SC was held to five service aces.
