Women's Volleyball Starts Season with Two Losses on First Day of Hastings Classic

The Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team opened the 2023 season with two matches on the first day of the Hastings College Volleyball Classic in Hastings, Neb.

The Wildcats opened the day with a hard-fought loss to Bethany (Kan.) in three sets, falling 25-19, 25-23, 26-24. Several hours later, C-SC faced the College of St. Mary (Neb.) late Friday night and fell to the Flames 25-13, 25-21, 21-16.

Against College of St. Mary, Ashleigh Brawley led the offensive attack with seven. Brawley, the junior middle hitter, recorded two attack errors on 13 attempts for a .385 attack percentage. Freshman Emma Daleen registered six terminations, while freshman Norah Boggs and junior Dilan Perry garnered five kills each.

Sophomore Lauren Bloom dished out a team-best 12 digs with freshman Sam Wright gathering eight set assists. The Wildcats committed nine service errors and did not record a service ace in the match.

Defensively, the Wildcats were shutout at the net with no blocks while Kyla Ellis totaled a team-high 12 digs in the back row.

In the match with Bethel, Daleen paced the Wildcat offensive attack with 10 kills in her first collegiate match. Boggs and Zoe Irvin each recorded five terminations, while Bloomhad 17 set assists. Ellis garnered 17 digs in the back row and Sydney Powell tallied two solo blocks at the net

C-SC concludes the tournament Saturday with two more matches. The Wildcats are slated to face Kansas Wesleyan University at 10 a.m. before finishing the tournament with as match against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
