Brawley, Women's Volleyball Beats HLGU for First Victory of the Season

The Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team gained its first victory of the year with a four-set decision over Hannibal-LaGrange University at the Mabee Sports Complex Tuesday night in Hannibal, Mo.

The Wildcats captured the first two sets 25-20, 25-22 and had match point at 24-23 in the third set before the Trojans rallied to take the set 27-25 and force a fourth game.

In the fourth set, C-SC fell behind by as many as seven points (18-11) and was staring at a possible fifth and decisive set when it found its rhythm and won 14 of the final 16 points to claim the set and the match with a 25-20 victory.

The victory was the 16th consecutive victory for the Wildcats over the Trojans, dating back to the 2013 season. The last time C-SC (1-4) dropped a match to HLGU was the first match of the 2012 campaign.

Ashleigh Brawley paced a balanced offensive attack with 10 kills on 25 attempts. Two freshmen, Emma Daleen and Norah Boggs, contributed nine kills each, while Sydney Powell had her best match as a Wildcat with eight terminations.

The two-setter system was also balanced and garnered 35 of the 47 set assists overall. Lauren Bloom recorded 18 set assists while Sam Wright registered 17 set assists. Brawley led the service brigade with three aces.

Defensively, Kyla Ellis totaled a match-high 21 digs while Dilan Perry chipped in with 11 digs. Brawley recorded two solo blocks at the net.

C-SC concludes a back-to-back night of matches Wednesday night, Aug. 30, with a match at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside Anderson Arena.
