Women's Volleyball Goes 2-2 at Coyote Classic

The Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team split four matches at the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes Classic Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, in Salina, Kan.

The Wildcats lost the first match each day before rebounding in the second match to finish 2-2 in the tournament and improve to 3-8 overall. C-SC is slated to host Grand View University this Tuesday, Sept. 12, in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match at Charles Field House. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

On Friday, the Wildcats began the weekend with a four-set loss to John Brown (Ark.). After winning the first set 26-24, C-SC dropped the final three sets 25-15, 25-18, 25-20. In their second match of the night, the Wildcats jumped out to a two-set lead before holding off Haskell (Kan.) 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25, 15-13.

C-SC registered 35 total kills against John Brown with freshman Norah Boggs tabulating a team-high nine kills and Zoe Irvin garnering eight terminations. Irvin added a team-best 15 digs on defense, while Kyula Ellis totaled 11 digs. Ashley Brawley had five block assists.

In the five-set thriller against Haskell, Emma Daleen led three players in double figure kills with 13. Brawley totaled 12 while Irvin had 11 kills. Lauren Bloom recorded 23 set assists and had four service aces in the match. Defensively, Kyla Ellis and Dilan Perry each garnered 20 digs or more, finishing with 24 and 21, respectively. Daleen, Irvin and Bloom all recorded double-doubles with Daleen also totaling 13 digs to go along with her 12 terminations. Irvin had 13 digs to go with her 11 kills, while Bloom had 11 digs to go with her 23 assists. Allie Hull was also in double figures with 10 digs.

After a late night Friday, the Wildcats started slowly Saturday morning, falling to host Kansas Wesleyan 27-25, 25-15, 26-24.

Irvin registered 10 kills to lead C-SC while Boggs and Brawley had six terminations each. Bloom and Sam Wright combined for 24 set assists with Bloom recording 14 of those assists. Perry and Ellis led a very balanced effort in the back row with eight digs each. Bloom finished with seven digs while Hull and Daleen had six digs.

The Wildcats concluded the weekend on a good note by defeating Bethany (Kan.) in four sets, 25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23.

Brawley and Irvin were each in double figures in kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Boggs just missed reaching double figures, finishing with nine kills, while Faith Hopgood had seven terminations. Bloom and recorded 23 set assists. Defensively, Ellis had 28 digs to lead the way.  Perry added 21 digs. Daleen (12), Hull (11), Bloom (10) and Irvin (10) were also in double figures in digs.
