Wildcats Use Balanced Attack to Capture Heart Opener over Graceland
The Culver-Stockton College women's volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to claim a three-set sweep over Graceland University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference opener for both teams Tuesday night at Charles Field House.
The Wildcats had four players with five or more kills in the 25-14, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the Yellowjackets.
Each team struggled attacking in the first two sets, but the Wildcats took advantage of 14 Graceland service errors to capture the first two sets. The Yellowjackets ended the night with 17 service errors.
Zoe Irvin and Ashleigh Brawley each recorded six terminations each to lead the Wildcat attack. Abby Godwin and Victoria Pollard totaled five kills apiece.
Both teams had a negative attacking percentage over the first two sets; however, the Wildcats found the hitting stroke in the third set, finishing strong with a .231 percentage in the third set while the Yellowjackets managed just a .105 hitting percentage in the final set.
Godwin also a strong overall performance beside her hitting. Godwin registered five service aces and reached double digits in digs with 11.
Kyla Ellis and Pollard were also in double figures in digs, recording 19 and 10, respectively. Brawley and Irvin each had three block assists.
The Wildcats, now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the Heart, will participate in the Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) Tournament this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14, in St. Louis, Mo. The Wildcats are slated to face Brescia (Ky.) at 4:30 p.m. and UHSP at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
