Straus Wins, Smashes School Record in Cross Country Debut
It was quite the debut for Delaney Straus during the season-opening Great River Open cross country meet Friday afternoon at River Valley Golf Course in Canton, Mo.
Straus, who is running cross country as a collegian for the first time this year, obliterated the school record and won C-SC's first cross country individual race since the program was re-booted in 2008.
Straus covered the four-kilometer distance in a time of 14:44.5 to easily top the previous mark of 18:30.6 by Spencer Randolph in 2012. Straus' performance helped the Wildcats establish a school team record of 1:30.45, placing second to Central Methodist's 1:19.4.
The next six runners behind Straus were from Central Methodist before Faith Younce and Emma Berry placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Younce finished in a time of 16:52.0, while Berry registered a time of 18:13.9. Zoi Smith finished with a strong kick to place 13th overall at 19:26.7.
Caroline Lindsey completed her circuit in 21:28.7 to place 16th overall while Klaudia Blaszczyk placed 17th overall.
The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the Dutch Cross Country Invitational next Friday, Sept. 6 in Pella, Iowa, The women are schedule to run at 6:45 p.m.
