Men's Soccer Opens Season with Tie Against HLGU
The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team and Hannibal-LaGrange University played a physical, sometime chippy, opening game Monday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium in Canton, Mo.
The game featured 33 combined fouls, 11 yellow cards and one red card, issued to HLGU's Head Coach Lucas Almeida, in the season-opening 1-1 draw.
Both goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes of the game with the Trojans striking first in the 27' when Wildcat goalkeeper Ricardo Fischbach, who was nearly 30 yards off his line, was pressured and misplayed a ball. HLGU's Henry Muniz picked up the loose ball and kicked it in to the open net for a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats didn't waste much time getting the equalizer, taking just over four minutes to tie the game.
C-SC forced a corner kick, one of five in the first half for the Wildcats who finished with seven in the game.
Layne Helvey took the corner and sent the ball to the middle of the penalty area where Gino Buffa re-directed it to the foot of Reuben Reinertsen who hit a one-timer past Trojan goalkeeper Sergio Arenas in the 31st minute.
The goal was the first for Reinertsen this season and his 11th goal over the last two seasons.
HLGU outshot the Wildcats 10-7 in the game, including 6-5 in the opening half. The Wildcats held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
The second half didn't produce much drama as the two teams combined for six total shots, including four shots on goal.
With the exception of the first half miscue, Fischbach, making his first career start for the Wildcats, registered five saves in the match.
The Wildcats, who are now 2-0-5 in non-conference games under Head Coach Tyler Hamilton, are slated to play another non-conference match this Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Game time is set for 3:45 p.m.
