Men's Soccer Scores Two Goals Late to Salvage Tie with Harris-Stowe
The Culver-Stockton men's soccer team scored twice in the final five minutes of the second half to escape with a 2-2 tie at Harris-Stowe State University Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo.
The Wildcats found themselves down 2-0 after the first 45 minutes on the strength of two goals by the Hornets in a span of 68 seconds just 25 minutes into the game.
However, the Wildcats controlled the play for the majority of the second half, holding an 11-4 advantage in shots after the halftime break.
That persistence finally paid off when Tobias Vales took a pass from Matthew Graham and found the back of the net to cut the Harris-Stowe lead in half in the 85th minute.
That goal energized C-SC and the Wildcats kept the pressure on with the result being a couple of corner kicks.
The first corner kick led to a shot by Graham that resulted in a save and another corner kick of the Wildcats.
This time Eric Lewczyk's corner kick found Ruben Reinertsen who knew what to do with it. Reinertsen buried the shot into the back of the net for the game-tying goal with just 1:47 remaining in the game. It was Reinertsen's second goal of the season.
The Wildcats held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks for the game and an 18-12 advantage in shots overall.
Goalkeeper Ricardo Fischbach allowed the two early goals and then settled in a shut out the Hornets over the final 65 minutes of the match. Fischbach was called upon to make just two saves in the game.
C-SC, now 0-1-2 overall, is slated to host Ottawa (Kan.) University this Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
