Men's Soccer Gets Unlucky Bounce, Draws with CMU

The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team snapped an 11-game losing streak inside the Heart of America Athletic Conference, dating back to last season, with a 1-1 tie against 22nd-ranked Central Methodist University Saturday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Wildcats deserved better.

Despite CMU having a decided advantage in shots, possession time, and corner kicks, the Wildcats made the most of their limited opportunities to put a scare into the Eagles.

CMU held just a 5-1 edge in shots in a scoreless first half, but turned up the pressure in the second half, out-shooting the hosts 11-4 in the second 45 minutes. CMU also held a 16-0 advantage in corner kicks, including 11-0 in the second half.

Still, it was the Wildcats who struck first and held the lead for nearly 30 minutes in the second half.

A race to a loose ball deep in CMU territory turned into a penalty kick attempt for C-SC after a handball by the Eagles inside the penalty box.

Enzo Lima converted the penalty kick in the 58th minute and gave C-SC a 1-0 lead. It was Lima's first goal of the season.

The Wildcats protected that lead by clearing the zone and getting superb goalkeeping from freshman Ricardo Fischbach. Fischbach made seven saves in the game, including a sprawling stop on a point-blank shot inside the six-yard box to keep C-SC with a one goal lead.

However, a bad break would come in the 86th minute when a run by the Eagles ended with a hard Cesar Cueller shot from about 25 yards out.

The shot was blocked at by the defense and bounced into the air. Instead of trying to get a head on it to clear, the Wildcats led the ball bounce. Fischbach misjudged the bounce and the back spin carried it over the head of Fischbach and into the net for the game-tying goal.

CMU really put on the pressure after the tying goal, recording six straight corner kicks at one point. But the Wildcats survived each attempt and came away with a disappointing tie.

The Wildcats, now 0-9-4 overall this season, is slated to host Waldorf University in a non-conference match this Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
